ROBERT
SZUSTKOWSKI

A PASSION FOR COMPETITION

The desire to face challenges and the passion for competition – these two factors made Robert Szustkowski, a successful businessman, also actively enter the world of sport.

RALLY DRIVER…

For almost a decade, he has been at the start of numerous off-road rallies organized around the world, cooperating with a recognized Polish rallyer – Jarosław Kazberkuk. He represented Poland as a member of the Lotto Team, as well as a member of his own crew – R-Six Team – in which he is not only an active player, but also a patron. He also passed on his passion for motorsport to his son, Robin, who as a driver also represented Polish national colors at several international events. The younger son, Aleks Szustkowski, is also following his father’s footsteps.

… AND SAILOR

Robert Szustkowski’s second sporting love is sails. Here, too, enthusiasm, determination and skills have already resulted in substantial achievements. The R-Six Team 6601 crew, which Szustkowski is the leader of, starts on the HH66 catamaran. In 2016 they won the Multihull Cup Regatta. In 2017 and 2018, the team won a cup of the prestigious Caribbean competition Antigua Sailing Week. One of the greatest achievements of the R-Six Team was also the second place in the famous Rolex Fastnet Race, in the class of MOCRA multihulls.

The crew of the Mitsubishi Pajero in the colors of the R-sixteam team reached the finish line of the Dakar Rally with the 35th place. Thus, Robert Szustkowski and Jarek Kazberuk became the only Polish representatives who completed this year’s competition in the class of off-road cars. Asked about technical problems with the vehicle, debuting in Dakar, Robert Szustkowski replied:

„Complaining about our equipment would be a sin, because it is a car that has already traveled its fourth Dakar. However, this is a car that was created 6 years ago and has limited capabilities. It brought us to the finish line, so we can not complain. ”

„The car was well prepared, we also had a brilliant mechanics brigade. On one of the episodes, 30 cars dropped out, despite the fact that they were better prepared, stronger, technically more efficient and better drivers drove them. We managed to get there and this is aresult of many things. One of them is certainly luck. Me and Jarek are probably born lucky, because we managed to arrive to the finishing line, despite many adversities. I’m a novice. This was my first rally and I think it’s not the last. We will see where the Dakar Rally will take place next year. ”

After the fourth stage of the event, the Poles took ninth place, because on the special stage they stopped twice to help their rivals. Despite these breaks, they obtained the 11th time. – We were a little surprised that this place is so high. First, we stopped to help a colleague from the Tatra team, Artur Ardawiczius, and later Marek Dąbrowski and Jacek Czachor, who got stuck in a car in a rut and it would be difficult to get out – said Kazberuk.

A good result was perhaps due to the fact that on some fragments the Lotto Team drivers were speeding up their truck, called affectionately Princessa, to the maximum speed. – The beginning seemed annoying, more technical, the route led through the sand. That’s why everything went slower. But the ending was a lot of fast parts. It happened that we had 150 km/h on the meter – Robin was excited.

The stage leading from Astrakhan to Elista through the desert was shortened by the organizers because of the hellish heat. – At one point the temperature in our cabin was 57 degrees. These are not conditions in which it is safe to cover a route of over 500 kilometers. That’s why I’m happy that the stage has been shortened – said Szustkowski.

Robert Szustkowski and Jarosław Kazberuk from the R-SIX TEAM team were spectacularly successful, winning the jubilee 10th edition of the Africa Eco Race on the route from Monaco to Dakar in the T2 class.

The Polish crew in the Ford Raptor ended the show with a strong accent, winning in the capital of Senegal on the last Sunday special stage with the finish line over the legendary Lac Rose (Lake Pink), which traditionally ended previous African editions of the Dakar Rally. Szustkowski and Kazberuk literally crushed the competition at the final, most difficult stages and there they secured their victory.

„It’s hard to find words to describe how happy we are. During these two weeks we experienced many dramatic moments. The most experienced participants of the rally claimed that this year’s edition was more difficult than many African Dakars. Many vehicles literally crumbled along the route. Sometimes every few kilometers we saw more and more vehicles with broken wheels or other failures, eliminated from the rally. The most difficult situation were serial T2 class cars, such as ours. That’s why we tried to drive with a reasonable pace, with a view to reaching the finish line” – says Robert Szustkowski, founder and leader of the R-SIX TEAM crew.

– What decided about the success of such a diverse team in terms of experience?

– Robert Szustkowski, who runs the R-SIX Team project, is a type of „chaser”. For years, he has been in car rallies, he likes rivalry. I think that this is a key factor. Part of the crew who does not have the experience of racing, are rally drivers. They learn very quickly what is regatta trim and how the correct maneuvers look. No problem in communication, we can get along. We proved it in the Caribbean, where in the round of four events we were always on the podium. We sailed in a nice style, doing it better with each subsequent race. We have a good prognosis for the future, we are more and more closely matched. This is important because in a race everything changes very quickly, and the maneuvers need to be smooth. We make much less mistakes and that is why we have a reason to be satisfied.

After six days of struggle, the R-Six Team, representing Poland, won the general classification in the prestigious Offshore Multihull class. Thus the crew of Robert Szustkowski repeated their success from last year. Poles dominated the regatta, winning as many as four out of five races. Only in one of them R-Six Team took the second place.

R-Six Team 6601 is a crew of the HH66 catamaran, which consists of: Robert Szustkowski, Jarek Kazberuk, Tomasz Januszewski, Jacek Wysocki, Albert Gryszczuk, Robert Janecki and Alex Szustkowski. Almost 200 yachts competed in the whole regatta, and more than 1,500 sailors took part in the struggle at sea. Antigua Sailing Week was held for the 51st time.
